The new and improved format for comments

You may have noticed that in the last few days we have been trying to improve some of the features of Hungarian Spectrum that will, we hope, make reader discussion a great deal easier.

One of Hungarian Spectrum’s hallmarks is the quality of comments that accompany the daily posts. I can highly recommend to all readers that they periodically browse through the comments section. They will often find in-depth analyses from experts and thoughtful readers from all over the world.

So what’s new?

The problem with the original organization of comments was that it was difficult to follow nested comments. Readers lost the thread of a discussion. To remedy this problem one of our readers put a great deal of work into improving the format. And, yes, it is immeasurably better.

The one downside to this new system as initially designed was that commenters lost the ability to edit their own comments, a feature that everybody had welcomed when it was introduced a few months ago. And so our “resident” computer expert came to the rescue once again and added a feature that would include this function. Security experts, however, say that a system which includes the editing function in this configuration needs a “safety feature.” This means that everyone who wants to comment must register. Registration, which of course is free, will make absolutely no difference as far as the identity (and, where people choose, anonymity) of the commenters is concerned. Just as in the past, I am the only one who has access to commenters’ e-mail addresses. The only difference you will see will be the word “member” beneath the avatar.

So register now to make your voice heard and have your beautifully self-edited comments preserved for history.

I must be an idiot as I don’t see any place to actually register.

Hi,
When you try to leave a comment, right above the comment box you see three icons, Facebook, Twitter and WordPress. If you do not have any of those accounts, you can sign-up by clicking on the icon of your choice.
Let say, you click on WordPress, a window will open, giving you the option to log in with an existing account or sign up to anew one.
I hope this helps.

p.s.: After you logged in the first time you will likely be logged in each time automatically or at the first log in, it will ask you if you “wanted to be remembered”.

@Microbiologist and all:
This is still pre-test-mode where anything goes – or rather nothing works, no registering, no editing …
Please be patient!

wolfi: Did you try to log on with WordPress? I see you are still in “guest mode”. Try log in through WordPress. For me after logging in with WordPress it asked me if I am already registered on Hungarian Spectrum. After that it just lined my account. I do not see any way around this. You can create a “new id” with wordpress and if your email is used it will tell you.

Thank you so much, some1, in the name of all commenters here (and surely Eva’s too …) for your efforts!

I wanted to vote you up twice! ha

Via wordpress it works now – and it’s not too complicated to register!
I didn’t want to use my facebook account with my real name and history – too dangerous in my eyes regarding the loonies around.
Let’s have some fun! :

You call this fun? Dropping a large stone on your foot, now that’s fun in comparison. But this? (Actually I am trying how the commenting works.)
Well, it works fine. But just to keep up the grumbling mode, the type could be a but larger. Must one go blind just to make a lousy comment? (I hope you like this grouchy persona.)

At least with Firefox I can use CTRL and CTRL- to change the font size.
Funny: the plus sign is deleted …

Guest

Finally (I hope) registered–tho’ not with the name I wanted. Have a wordpress account–but the pw was rejected. Very confusing.

Guest

How can I change my name?

Guest

Try this:
Go to https://wordpress.com/me
Then click on the “profile picture” in the upper right corner and you’ll see your personal info, change the external name and whatever else you want to change …
Good luck!

Guest

Did it! Thanks wolfi7777! But don’t see the new name yet. (patience/grumble/patience)

Guest

Changed the name but it did not stick–still at gedance.

Guest

Tried again–didn’t say I couldn’t use the name as ‘public display name’.

Your sign up page is suffering from delusions of grander: it rejected a name without reason: “Choose a different username. This one is not available.” WTF! For the moment I am stumped.

Guest

Sandor, the name must be unique in all of wordpress!

Testing.

Oh! It is getting better, also touchy, can’t stand criticism: when I wrote “delusion of grandure,” it corrected it for “grander!” So, this is how you are working on improving the quality of comments? Geez!

(confession: I ma having fun, making fun of this registration business. Please bear with me.) Thanks

@Some1

Hi Some1!

I seem to be blocked from registering via both Facebook and WordPress.

In Facebook, I have a different email address and username from that in Hungarian Spectrum, so that might be the problem.

In WordPress, the expectation is that I already have an account and password, which I don’t.

So I am stuck.

No big deal, I shall just continue to post as a guest.

Guest

Mike, go to wordpress.com and register there – though it might happen that your username is already taken, it happened to me and Sandor.
It’ll send a confirmation message to your email address which you have to acknowledge.

The name must be unique for all of wordpress …

Thanks wolfi. That worked.

Yes! Oh joy! Oh Pleasure! And it only took an hour and a half and some downers and some anti-explosive alcohol.
Thank you! Thank you! And thank you.

Thanks to all who worked on the software! I know how detailed it is to fix issues! I used to test out software for those ‘bugs’.
Anyway I haven’t registered yet but just would like to know if my name is ‘taken’ and I have to change how will everybody know it’s ‘me’???…;-)…

Guest

Try Rikard! Then if it’s taken – it probably is! Try RickardRikard then RickardRikardRikard! We’ll know it’s you!

I think I’m charliecharlieh!

Hehe …One name ok but multiples are a bit over the top! Kind of like bringing my resume in 5 suitcases to a job interview…;-)…’Ok Rikard we get the message!’

It is a “widget” we try to configure for this site. I cannot write softwares, hence I ahed to play around with it too.

Member

It’s well worth it… hahahaha The truth is that the only way we could have the HungarianSpectrum registration only if we would tun off the feature that allows guests I turned on wordpress it connected the two accounts.

FONT SIZE
A few of you experiencing some problems with the font size. I am very surprised as I eat the font size larger than it was before. Now I set it a pixel larger. If you still do not see any changes in the size of the fonts, there is a possibility that your browser’s preferences setting overrides the font size given by the site.

You can change your display name on wordpress! (You can change your username too but only once.)

2 CLICK on Edit My Profile
3 SCROLL to Nickname and type in the name you wish to use
4 CLICK on Display name publicly as- Choose the Nickname you just typed

!!! After 3 you may need school to the bottom and CLICK on Update Profile before you can proceed on step 4!!!!

The ability to follow nested comments easily is welcome.
However, the truncating of longer comments – with a Read more link at the bottom – is not.

Obviously it mean that any possibilities of corrections after publishing the comment is gone too!
I just discovered the “feature” and I’m not one of the entirely pleased, to be honest.
(But, if I think it over again, I used to be honest anyway, so what now?)

Just register via wordpress – it’s not too difficult.

I did contact the developers of two “widgets” we employed. Here is the scoop. We are already working on a layout that is not a native template for WordPress. Eva choose this template as it seems to have all the layout features the readers, and Eva prefer and got used to. Example sidebar Recent Comments, Recent Posts, Subscription. Simple layout with not to much features were also important. The comment options were not working out so well as the native comment features do not allow threading the comments, so we added this comment feature. People wanted an editing option, so we added a third widget to be able to edit. With all the added options, and the automatic updates with newer WordPress operating software, some of the features started to behave erratically. There were several posts regarding to these problems, so I looked into an other commenting feature. The new commenting widget is much clearer and nicer than the previous one and has some options that commenters asked for in the past (Newest, Oldest, etc) It does not offer the editing for Guests. I did contact the widget’s developer, and the promised that by next month, they will implement the… Read more »
