Hate campaigns and their consequences

President János Áder, who had been reelected for another five-year term already in March, delivered his inaugural address on May 8. If we can believe him, his original intent was to talk about all the work that still lies ahead for the nation. “Looking at the political discourse of the past months,” however, he came to the conclusion that “if things go on like this, we will destroy everything we have managed to build together since 1990. We question everything. We completely disregard every—even tacit—agreement we have made. We go beyond all limits.” So, what is the remedy? According to Áder, the simple answer is “reconciliation.”

In his speech I found only two sentences that deserve closer scrutiny. One was a Ferenc Deák quotation, the third in the short speech, which can be construed as a criticism of the governance of the Orbán government. Deák, the architect of the 1867 Compromise with the Crown, warned that “Hungary should not be loved with inciting thoughts unsettling it, but with a series of everyday, useful deeds that promote prosperity.” The second sentence came from the section on the quality of public discourse, which has deteriorated dramatically over the years. “I don’t want to dwell on responsibilities and on who is to blame. However, political numbers and majority status dictate that the responsibility of government parties is greater,” Áder admitted.

Skeptics are certain that Áder’s words were approved by Viktor Orbán himself, who needs to cool the overheated political atmosphere. Others, like György Csepeli, a social psychologist, consider the speech a perfect example of hypocrisy. After all, Áder signed the bill that threatens the very existence of Central European University, which added fuel to the fire, but the same man now wants a world in which people of different political persuasions live in harmony. If I may add another observation. Áder admits that the larger share of the responsibility falls on Fidesz, but simply because it is the governing party with a large majority. He is wrong. The reason for this state of affairs is not political arithmetic but the militaristic style of Fidesz, which leads to both verbal and physical violence. There was a time when Áder himself, as the leader of Fidesz’s parliamentary delegation, practiced the same kind of verbal coercion he now decries.

Zsolt Bayer, about whom I have written 13 posts since the beginning of 2011, is certainly not helping to tone down Hungarian political discourse. Bayer, one of the founding members of Fidesz who still has the full support of Viktor Orbán and his party, is notorious for his anti-Semitism and his vile writing. This time he ranted about the handful of NGO leaders who appeared at a parliamentary hearing to silently protest a pending bill that would discriminate against those NGOs that receive financial aid from abroad. When asked his opinion of their silent demonstration, Bayer said: “If people like this show up in the parliament building again and disrupt their work, then they need to be thrown out like shitting cats. If they need to be pulled out through their snot and blood, then they should be pulled out through their snot and blood….Their faces should be beaten to smithereens, if need be.”

The objects of Zsolt Bayer’s ire

As György Balavány, a conservative journalist, pointed out, Bayer is not a lone overly active pitbull. “He is the voice of the party” which, despite all pro-government opinion polls, is afraid. Facing widespread opposition, the Orbán government has “no other strategy than the intimidation of the public and the incitement of its own followers. Both of them can serve as preliminaries to physical force.” Meanwhile, Fidesz acts as if the increasingly frequent physical encounters simply didn’t exist. Orbán, for example, said that “it is not his job” to comment on claims of that sort. Among those Fidesz members who had an opinion on Bayer’s latest, some found his remarks perfectly acceptable. For example, according to Fidesz spokesman Balázs Hidvéghi, Bayer didn’t cross the line between free speech and incitement. The spokesman of the Fidesz parliamentary delegation said that Bayer is like that, “and this is how many of us like him.”

At this point TASZ’s two lawyers, who took part in the silent demonstration at the hearing, decided to offer Bayer an opportunity to discuss their differences over a cup of coffee. Bernadett Szél, co-chair of LMP, said she would join them. The naïve souls. First of all, any rational exchange with Bayer is a hopeless task. Worse, TASZ’s invitation was a tactical mistake because Bayer countered, saying he wants to extend the invitation to individuals on the anti-government side who, in his opinion, were either violent or who incited others to violence. Bayer suggested that the following individuals should be invited: Márton Gulyás and Gergő Varga, the two activists who were stopped from throwing washable orange paint on the president’s office, and two journalists from 24.hu who, according to Bayer, wanted him to hang on the first lamp post. He also thinks a pro-government female journalist should be present, who could tell how frightened she was among the “liberal” and “European” crowd at one of the demonstrations. Perhaps the editor-in-chief of a regional paper could also attend, who said that he is afraid that Orbán can be disposed of only in the way the Romanians managed to get rid of Ceaușescu. “If you think that I will take responsibility for the current state of public discourse alone, then you are mistaken.” Since then, others have indicated that they will attend and suggested more people who have been verbally abused by Bayer. One of these people was András Hont of HVG, who responded on Facebook: “Thank you, but I don’t want any coffee.”

Meanwhile fear and hatred have reached dangerous proportions in the country. The following incident in the heart of Budapest tells a lot about the impact of the government’s hate campaign against the European Union and the migrants. An employee of a pizza parlor on Kálvin tér, a bona fide Hungarian, thinking that one of his customers was a tourist, addressed the man in English. In turn, the customer called him a “filthy migrant.” And he kept yelling that Hungary belongs to the Hungarians and that he is not a tourist in his own country. He called the waiter “a cockroach.” When a young woman asked him to stop insulting the waiter who mistook him for a tourist, he hit the woman on the head, knocked her glasses off, and called her a stupid woman whose brain is filled with urine. Her bitter reaction after the incident was: “Long live the politics of hate, the brainwashing, and the incitement.”

Szilárd Németh, the embodiment of Fidesz primitiveness who is a deputy to Viktor Orbán, when asked about the incident, expressed his belief that the whole thing was nothing more than a “damned provocation” because anything can happen here “since George Soros set foot in this country and his provocateurs do what he tells them to do.” He added that this kind of incident has absolutely nothing to do with the Orbán government’s communication tactics because the government has never attacked the migrants. It has only defended Hungary and Europe. Poor Hungary, poor Europe.

There was a highly revealing sentence in Ader’s speech, in which he suggested that references to the children of other politicians is an example of what civilized public discourse should avoid but became only too frequent in Hungary. That example made it quite clear that he was not into “warning” Fidesz that the party’s style and tone have become too violent and undemocratic. Or maybe that was his intent but cowardice in delivery brought him eerily close to seconding the propaganda line that accuses with “dirty campaigning” the opposition, which occasionally raises questions about how relatives get inexplicably rich, or why Ader thinks Lex CEU is a good idea if his own daughter studied at an American university that only operates outside of America.

Ader doesn’t “think” Lex CEU is good or not. His job is about signing what is sent to him. He understood this just as Pal Schmitt did. Neither voters nor presidents are rational. He doesn’t give a shit about logical consistency.

Ader is exactly the same corrupt, die-hard Fidesznik as Antal Rogan, Janos Lazar, Szilard Nemeth, József Szájer and the rest. Only Ader is less talkative so people assumed he is more “reasonable”. Just like people assumed Janos Martonyi, Zoltan Pokorni or Gergely Prohle were “liberals” or Zsolt Nemeth an “Atlaticist”.

Orban handpicked Ader and Orban only selects people with 100% loyalty. And loyalty is only 100% if there’s something with which that person can be controlled. Pal Schmitt had many shady things in his past and we have to assume Ader has too. Otherwise he just wouldn’t be there where he is. But this doesn’t really matter. Point is Ader is a droid, a drone, he is a breathing signing machine and nothing else. Time to wake up – there are no “reasonable” fideszniks.

@Hubert, 1:59 a.m.

Thank you. You have well summarized Mr. Ader’s role in the Fidesz establishment. He is president in order to kiss VO’s rear end and his speech is an attempt to cover Fidesz crudity with a veneer of dignity.

“President János Áder, who had been reelected for another five-year term already in March”

Don’t write things like this, please. Some people may need serious help, counseling or medication when they realize that President Ader will be in office until 2022. The danger of self-harm or other actions due to lunacy or unhinged behavior will be great.

I remember in 2010-2011 how many unhinged people believed that the government will fall and no Fidesz politician will be in power anywhere within a few months.

And now we learn that Ader will be President until 2022. He will provide very strong checks and balances indeed, in case Jobbik gains power in the elections (as many people in this community hope).

MSZP I don’t think anyone believes has much of a chance Jobbik has all the money and media through their oligarch, Simicska, while MSZP is only swimming in debt. In any case the checks and balances will be extremely strong against them, as they should be.

I don’t think many people appreciate the strength of checks and balances against a possible Jobbik or MSZP government, which will be very necessary to rein in any possible excesses, in case they make it in 2018 or 2022.

Doggo, first Eva can write here everything what’s on her own mind! So I strongly request you, like me just a guest here, to take back the first 3 paragraphs of your comment.
Second I consider your statement, of Ader providing very strong C&B, complete bogus, as Ader in the last 8 months (since I’m closely following HU matters again), when there were enough occasions, has nothing done at all to support it.
Third note that overviewing movements within the Hungarian electorate, I am of the opinion that:
Fidesz sowing hate and fear, will harvest Jobbik’s bigger hate and fear (only less corrupt, so far…)
So, you fear “Jobbik gains power”, best stop supporting Fidesz!!

Re: ‘checks and balances’ in Magyarorszag…

From the looks of it it would appear that if the country had the wherewithal to have a consortium of say multiple ‘Comeys’ dispersed in various institutions of the government the paucity of ‘checks and balances’ would not even call for consideration.
The bulwarks would already be in place to deal with the challenges. Unfortunately they have beeb blown to the prevailing winds. Personalities awol in a country desperately needing them.

The Daily Mail was singled out by wikipedia as a “not trustworthy source” and banned!

In February 2017, the English Wikipedia developed a consensus position rejecting the Daily Mail as being a reliable source for its articles, deeming its reporting to be “generally unreliable”
And I might have written this before:

These two things are absolutely unconnected – the only connection may be your fear of children whose heritage you can’t control …

Or are you afraid that Soros will now have children produced according to his ideas?
Another way of “invading”/killing off the poor Magyars in the future …
Btw how many children have you “produced”? And will you send them back to Hungary to help with reproducing the glorious Magyar “race”?

Maybe better for you to continue reading the Mail and kuruc instead of commenting here …

BUT what does this really have to do with the reference you started your first comment with?
“Re: Hungarians accepting migrants & population decrease etc.”
I mean migrants are living people, no need to ‘make’ them, and the population in Hungary is decreasing, (seen from Hungary) not because of immigrants and only partly because of emigrants…

There’s still someone required to raise the children – and those people are hard to find in Hungary! So this will work only in other countries probably.

My take on the Kalvin ter incident is that the guy was probably mentally ill, possibly drunk. You see these people hanging out in the Kalvin ter underpass, where Trio Pizza is located. (It is actually a pizza stand, not a pizza parlor.) This does not excuse his behavior, but I find it hard to believe he had any kind of political agenda.

It’s also not clear he learned his vocabulary from Fidesz’s hate campaign against the migrants. There are plenty of home-grown racists here.

What is entirely inexcusable is Nemeth’s attempt to turn the incident into part of the anti-Soros campaign.

As a foreign-born citizen of Hungary, I can affirm that it is incredibly irritating when Hungarians switch into English for no reason. In some restaurants, the waiters might be so “helpful” that they’ll bring you a special English-langauge menu on which the prices are significantly higher than the normal menu. Or, a strange “tourist tax” appears on the bill, which the waiter explains is compulsory for all foreigners.

Ferenc

“they’ll bring you a special English-langauge menu on which the prices are significantly higher than the normal menu. Or, a strange “tourist tax” appears on the bill, which the waiter explains is compulsory for all foreigners.”
I heard/know such things happened in the past (15-25 years ago), but can hardly imagine these sort of things happening still. Do you have any recent proof about such?
If so, I suspect these sort of things to be in a sort of revival coming out of the “anti-everything not Hungarian” sentiment at the heart of all recent and current Fidesz campaigns.

Member

Recently, I have not heard about the kind of outrageous, multi-million forint restaurant bills that were handed to tourists 15-20 years ago. My most recent experiences are from 4-5 years ago and involved a few thousand forints. When I started yelling at the waiter in Hungarian, he responded, “Sorry, I thought you were English.”

I tend to avoid such places these days.

Guest

A bit OT:
At least here around Hévíz you don’t see that – special menues for foreigners. You have one “étlap” with text in different languages, usually German, English and of course nowadays Russian.

PS:
Our favourite restaurants don’t have that Russian language option – the young female owner of one of these told us once she doesn’t want these guests, at least not in large numbers …

az angol beteg

The father of a great friend of mine had a few restaurants in that part of the world and a story he told about skulduggery in the hospitality industry comes to mind.
Down at Balaton it was / is common practise not to give a vat receipt or even a till ticket after a meal to avoid payment of vat. Of course in July and August APEH of NAV or whoever were out in force checking to ensure that they received a ticket of some kind.
One day a family walk into a local restaurant for lunch. He’s black, she’s white, the kids presumably coffee coloured and they’re all speaking German.
At the end of the meal their bill comes hand written on a piece of paper and the customer hands the waiter a card written in Hungarian informing him that he’s a representative of the tax authority!

Guest

From my experience this episode “számla kell?” happens only between me and people doing work for us who know and totally trust us – there often is a knowing chuckle …
Restaurants here often have the facility of paying via the card terminal they bring to your table and many customers (especially Hungarian ones …) use this option.
Totally OT:
As regular customers we get a 10% discount in our favourite restaurants even! Of course this is compensated by a good tip – and often some German chocolate (Ritter Sport factory outlet is near our house in Germany…)!

Member

Come to Budapest. Only losers pay VAT. I know of one service shop (not saying which one) where they give their trusted customers a special code that entitles you to a 10% discount – if you pay cash and don’t ask for a receipt.

The restaurant stuff makes me laugh because the ripping off is just par for the course. Probably going on rampantly nowadays. I was aware of it back in the good ole days.

In looking at the checks, I had a feeling some of the ‘nums’ didn’t add up on a dinner bill and especially on a car rental. Some I argued but for the most part I paid it anyway since I was on holiday for awhile in the country. I had the ‘play’ money to spend and the relationship between dollars and forints in the Kadar years was almost astronomical.

The fascinating thing is when I made some payments it was an amount that could put one of the waiter’s kids through Harvard with grad school thrown in. Maybe they knew it too but for the time other visions came into their dealings with kulfoldis. And I did my deed for the their underground economy. 😎

Ich habe am 12. Mai 2017 den Führer der Ungarischen Nation, Viktor Orbán, ersucht, mir als politisch Verfolgtem Asyl in Ungarn zu gewähren.
He was a left extremist once (RAF lawyer) and then changed into a rabid fascist antisemite – his hate speaches and holocaust denial got him a long sentence again after a long trial in 2009 which he of course tries to avoid.
Now it will be interesting to see whether Hungary gives this lunatic person asylum …

Fidesz looks to have two soundtracks. Bayerian ‘bombast’ at times with exaggerated high tempo and Orban and Ader as dual conductors always seeking to hold and control rhythm. Just came across “The KidsRights Index”, the annual global index published by the KidsRights Foundation which ‘charts how countries adhere to and are equipped to improve children’s rights’.
Wanted to make the usual infogram for the V4 countries, but the data over the last 5 years shows so much fluctuations for reasons difficult to get clear, that I didn’t complete it.
Nevertheless Hungary seems to score quit OK over the last 5 years, both overall and within the V4, so that’s positive (for the past). But how far the current hate and fear campaigns will influence this, can only become clear in the future.
http://www.kidsrightsindex.org/
PS: encountered following very peculiar thing:
“At present the Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989) is ratified by all of the world’s nations but one: the United States of America. And therefore not included in the KidsRights Index.”
People from the US can shine their light, comment and/or clarify this?

People like Bayer and Orban who worship the cult of violence as opposed to reasoned and civilised debate deserve to suffer the kind of treatment they threaten others with. I appreciate I am probably in a minority of one here in hoping that Bayer, Orban, Kover and the rest of the criminals get a taste of Old Testament justice that they are presently promising for the pro-democracy folk.

Unfortunately due to the realpolitik cowardice of the EU, the complete disarray of the democratic opposition and the general apathy/fear of the populace, I am coming round to the point of view that it may be the only way the fascist regime will ever be deposed f.

I appreciate that Orban swinging from a lamp-post (if one could be found strong enough to support the fat dictator) is not going to bring long-term reconciliation and prosperity to Hungary. But, for me personally, it would be a fitting end for a man I genuinely consider to be evil, a man who has not only brought lasting damage to his country but also one has through his criminality destroyed many innocent lives.

Let me paraphrase him.

Putin told Gyurcsany years ago that Orban is a crook. A few weeks ago he saw proof og this.
A person who spoke Russian-accented English showed Gyurcsany Orban’s Swiss and Singaporean bank account details,
where Orban received $1 to $3 million of laundered money. The person wants to sell the evidence to Gyurcsany.

Gy. wants to indict Orban abroad, since Hungarian Chief prosecutor Polt will never investigate Orban.
