First, a few words about István Simicskó, the former minister of defense. He received a Ph.D. in military sciences in 2009. His thesis, which has a very long title, has something to do with the organization of defense and mobilization “through history to our days,” a surprisingly broad topic for a Ph.D. dissertation. Otherwise, his name is associated with sports, mostly with martial arts, specifically Leung Ting Wing Tsun. Between 2010 and 2012 he served as undersecretary in the ministry of defense, but because of his less than amicable relation with Minister of Defense Csaba Hende he moved to the ministry of human resources, where he became undersecretary in charge of sports and youth. In 2015, when Hende was dismissed, Simicskó at last got the opportunity to put his ideas on national defense into practice. Less than three years later, after the 2018 election, Viktor Orbán no longer had a place for him in his cabinet. Reading Simicskó’s comments from a couple of months before the election, I’m almost certain that his dismissal was unexpected.
Orbán is normally quite generous with those loyal politicians who for one reason or another “didn’t work out.” As one often reads in the media, “they are not left on the roadside.” Some other job is found, or more often created, for them. This is one of the reasons for the incredible growth in the government bureaucracy. One favorite job for the discarded is “government commissioner” (kormánybiztos). Simicskó became government commissioner for patriotic and military education. In addition, he was chosen to chair the Honvédelmi Sportszövetség (Sports Federation of National Defense), a relatively new creation of the Orbán regime, which functions under the ministry of defense with a yearly budget of 1.1 billion forints.
The activities of the federation merit a full post, but here I will look at the patriotic education angle of István Simicskó’s new job. Almost a year ago I devoted a few lines to the frightening aspects of “teaching” patriotism/nationalism to youngsters. I wrote at the time that the distinction between patriotism and nationalism is often blurred. It’s enough to take a look at the dictionary definitions of the two terms. Patriotism is “love and devotion to one’s country” while nationalism is “devotion, especially excessive or undiscriminating devotion to the interests of culture of a particular nation state.” But what is excessive? The second meaning of nationalism is even more telling. Nationalism is “the belief that nations will benefit from acting independently rather than collectively, emphasizing national rather than international goals,” which is certainly true of the “patriotic” aspirations of the Orbán government.
Now that Simicskó is the government commissioner in charge of patriotic and military education, Magyar Idők arranged an interview with him so he could spell out his ideas on patriotic education. Let’s see what we can find out about the plans of Viktor Orbán and his willing assistant. Here we go. The western world is in trouble because it is globalized and too liberal. There are hidden forces that want to destroy national communities, families, and national consciousness. One of the main problems with western civilization is that it has abandoned its faith. “Healthy national consciousness” and faith in God are prerequisites for developing a patriotic citizenry, which is necessary for the survival of the Hungarian nation. Children should be empowered with instruments of spiritual defense, which I interpret as a way of instilling in them certain spiritual mechanisms that resist the evil intentions of foreign ideas like liberalism and internationalism. In brief, this is gibberish. But it’s dangerous nonetheless. As a blogger said, for Simicskó it matters not whether children can read or write as long as they love their country.
During the interview it became obvious that Simicskó regards history as the most suitable subject through which to achieve his goal since its content can be spiced up with patriotic/nationalistic fervor. I’m not surprised at his choice because history has always been a vehicle for political manipulation in Hungary. The teaching of history in Hungary is far too Hungaro-centric in the first place, which often deprives Hungarian students from seeing their country’s history within a European context. That fact by itself leads them astray when it comes to the history of pre-sixteenth century Hungary. They do not realize that even in the most glorious periods Hungary was still behind the West.
And that leads me to another, related item, an opinion piece that appeared in today’s Magyar Idők. It is about an article titled “Worrying changes in Hungary,” published in Nature. The op-ed writer, a certain Dávid Ligeti, is outraged because the famous journal published an editorial on the clash taking place between the Orbán government and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, siding naturally with the Academy. He claims that the article in Nature is “crawling” with mistakes and that most of the “accusations” come straight from the researchers of the academic institution. He found one especially outrageous sentence, which, he said, one cannot leave without an answer: “Many researchers in Hungary tell Nature they are worried … that historians will be required to glorify their country’s past.” Then he adds: “Yes, you read it right. We got to the point that a number of Hungarian historians are worried that they will have to write about Hungarian history in a positive manner.”
In the author’s estimation, these historians have not even a modicum of love of country even though “historical writing is an inevitably moral genre.” It is not at all clear what he means by that, but he quotes a certain László Gulyás, who teaches at the University of Szeged, according to whom “it is fitting to write Hungarian history with a Hungarian pen, Hungarian heart, and Hungarian soul.” In fact, responsible historians must do exactly the opposite of what László Gulyás suggests. They must work extremely hard to keep any bias in favor of their own country at bay and analyze the past as objectively as is humanly possible. In this case, the Hungarian pens, hearts, and souls should be left behind. Otherwise a historian is nothing more than a nationalistic propagandist.

“In this case, the Hungarian pens, hearts, and souls should be left behind. Otherwise a historian is nothing more than a nationalistic propagandist”…..and a liar.
In Hungary, nationalism often leads to chauvinism. It is damaging to the senses, as reality disappears and the World is viewed with distorting dark glasses. For most people, avoiding the truth now is probably better, as Hungary turned into a fascist country, a tool in Putin’s arsenal agains the EU and the US. When Hungary becomes bankrupt, both financially and morally, a heavy price will have be paid. A fasizmus 14 fő meghatározója, amit minden szélső jobbos diktátor követ, így a Stadionos viktor is ezt használja és hű minden betűjéhez. 1. Erős és folyamatos nacionalizmus. Never thought in my wildest dreams that I would live to see this especially after that ‘decrepit year’. I would hope this is simply an inordinate aberration in the circle of time. Who can tell where this will really wind up?
Topics like these are the opportunities where I can convey personal experience beyond presented facts on how easy it is to fall down the rabbit hole. You have a legitimate question on what counts as excessive, but it isn’t always an easy answer. Take for example the vice president, who chose the wrong country in the wrong region to convey the bottled message of racism, practically demanding to abandon all hope. It wasn’t simply racism, it was nationalism, more specifically white nationalism. UYou can and will find a pundit who will be eager to point out, he at no point meant only Hispanics. To his cruel credit, the detention and deportation of a Hungarian 2-year old is proof that they truly mean barring entry. It’s a different issue that I have a beef with the designation “the child can come home” in the media. He’s 2 who lived with his parents abroad with no solid concept on things like home, nation or long-term memory. Simicskó’s desire rang the alarm by me. The kind of brand he proposes led me and countless others in the dictatorship to learn how to use weapons, among them training grenades. I’m already against kids becoming… Read more »
“It was a history teacher who introduced us to the far right. Little by little she solidified the good values with the right wing and Christianity. Oh, that alone would be considered normal… until she started to dominate the conversation about the peace treaty that ended the Great War.”
The current system of education funding encourages religion-based (i.e. Christian-denomination schools) in Hungary, while running down the state sector. Of course, “Christian values” can be interpreted in any way the teacher (as the figure of authority) chooses, and it’s difficult for independent-minded kids to challenge the “word of God” in such an environment…
Thanks for most recent report of state sponsored nonsense.

Re: Feszty’s historical artwork
The thing about all art is that a viewer can always come to a picture and ask ‘what does it mean?’ Feszty’s work is an artistic reproduction of the past and has elements of myth-making and for today’s viewers it could indicate where they find themselves in relation to the painting and how they might view their country’s past, present and future history.
Viewers from the 21st look on at those looking and driving West as they come from the East in 895 A.D. In 2018 A.D those historic roots of the past seem to want to take hold and breed in the national consciousness. Perhaps Feszty’s work done in the 19th silently asks those perceptive viewers , ‘To be of the ‘East’ or ‘West’? ‘To be or not to be that is the question’. A country wrestling with identity such as Hamlet. Where are we going? Where do I/we fit? What is to be done?
Art usually brings up some of the great questions. Perhaps the precipice in the work underlies a symbolic presence of the debacles visited upon the country in Magyar history. It would seem to have an inclination for them.
Part of the “patriotic” propaganda is the notion of exclusivity/ superiority, the oft heard “they can’t understand because they are not Hungarians”, the 1000 yo culture (as if something exceptional), etc. There is nothing that makes a Hun per se superior to a Slovak, Czech let alone Austrian or German.

Our granddaughte is just watching a production of some story about King Matthias on M2 – it feels so crazy to indoctrinate pre school children already in the “superiority of Hungarians”.

I’m just wondering how they’ll explain that in the last 200 years Hungary lost every war …
King Matthias’s grandfather was called Radul, which indicates Vlach > Rumanian origin.
Radol [Radul] –> Janko —> Matthias

Remark:
The king’s father is called simply Janko in a Byzantian chronicle about the 1440s-1450s, without any family name.
Romanian Radu < Serbian Radul < Slavic rad = happy

Correction: Janko’s uncle was Radol, Janko’s father’s name was Voyk.

OT – Rule of Law
Weber (MEP, EPP, CSU) seems to have given a very good speech about deteriorating Rule of Law in Poland. Now let’s wait and see (warning: don’t hold your breath) how consequent he, his party (CSU), his ‘partner’ (CDU) and his group (EPP) really are.
Essential info in this case: Polish government is PiS (member of ECR, together with mainly UK Conservatives), while OV&Co, the EMIGRATION CAUSING bunch, are member of EPP (still…)

Yes, quite a story. I also recommend an opinion piece from Tamás Bauer in HVG. http://hvg.hu/itthon/20180704_bauer_xxi_szazadi_partok
As a guide to the veracities of the Christian faith, Orbán ranks rather lower than in his abilities as an atomic power station engineer (Paks) or as a railway transport engineer (M3 metro, recently reconditioned by Mr. Putin’s paint spray gun – the same noise and the same uneasy, rattling suspension system remain) among his recent achievements. The fact that he claims to base his philosophical direction for the re-writing of history on the unverifiable and made-man fairy tale of a 2000 year old cult structured to control says it all right there: “Healthy national consciousness” and faith in God are prerequisites for developing a patriotic citizenry, which is necessary for the survival of the Hungarian nation.” But Orbán seeks to employ only one well-tried control cult (christianity) to support his own fascistic, nationalistic, mafioso rule. I guess that within this vision, adherents to the world’s largest control cult (Islam) and Uhllah just don’t get a look in. Now we have a government commissioner in charge of patriotic and military education to propagate this thought manure throughout the schools and education system in Hungary? The very idea is disgusting and repugnant! But so what? The object is to control the… Read more »
Re: the making of Magyar ‘history’ as story-telling At this point the country is now in the throes of nationalistic fervor and all must be on the bandwagon. But this has proven to show the country at its most dismal in the relationships both within and without the country. It isn’t hard to understand how the creation of ‘history’ then has to follow a script of not showing the blemishes regardless of what facts exist but instead is made to produced forced narratives of ‘best, better, best’ in its national story. It acts as salve on the opposite sides of words of hatred and revenge, the drive for power and the quest for great victories and fears of defeat. In Magyar hands, nationalism is ruthless. It would appear the approach and rumination of Magyar history in the 21st will always have the driving force of ‘resentment’ always operating as the back-story to history-making. And since history cannot be made in a vacuum it will always be a question if a semblance of truth and integrity would exist in the tomes made as writers scribble with chips on their shoulders as they meditate about the how’s and why’s of their relationships… Read more »

Listeria deaths in five EU countries linked to frozen vegetables (from Hungary).

My wife just found the info on facebook for Hungary – all the supermarket chains from Aldi, CBA to Tesco are involved and all kinds ov frozen vegetables.
The good news:
Normall listeria areN’t too dangerous – only people witha very weak immune system have a risk.
Actually, Simicskó did not need to get a “new job” after leaving the Ministry of Defense, because he currently has another full time job: Member of Parliement from Újbuda.
Why he needs to do a “government commissioner” job as well is a mystery to me, since it obviously takes away from his duties supposedly serving his constituents of Újbuda.
It drives me nuts that these government people get 2-3 jobs and make multiple salaries when they clearly can not devote full-time attention to all of them simultaneously.
