Viktor Orbán, who until fairly recently, even after the coronavirus had already reached Hungary, was traveling all over the world, eventually came to the conclusion that perhaps having such a cavalier attitude toward the coronavirus crisis at home was politically not the best response. He moved into a self-quarantine of sorts. He could be seen walking the long corridors of the prime minister’s office looking serious and concerned. Then, about two days ago, he changed posture again. He now makes surprise visits to hospitals where coronavirus patients are being treated. And, while earlier, he would not wear a mask, he now sports full protective medical gear, from top to toe. As he put it in his radio “interview” this morning, his “instinct” dictates that this is the right thing to do. And he has done well to listen to his instincts.
On the other hand, I’m not at all sure that his instinct about the severity and the duration of the coronavirus pandemic and its economic consequences is correct. He is convinced that his government’s answers in 2010 to the global financial crisis, which were adequate then, will work this time. What happened then? In Orbán’s interpretation, as the result of all the money taken from the banks and multinational companies “the economy began to pick up.” The only difference between now and then is that this time “we don’t have to wait for years for the results because the economy will find itself back on the straight path within months.” He added that he doesn’t consider “the huge economic downturn that economists generally envision inevitable.” If there is a good plan, and his plan obviously is a good one, Hungary may come out of this a winner.
But there is a problem on the health front. COVID-19 is spreading in Hungary, with mini-epicenters developing in nursing homes. According to an article that appeared in Azonnali, the directors of nursing homes and assisted living facilities requested guidelines from the ministry of human resources about how to handle the situation, but for weeks they received no answers. For example, at one point the residents couldn’t have visitors but were allowed to shop in the local stores. While the directors were waiting for instructions, in at least two or perhaps even three facilities several people became infected. Two of the facilities were in Budapest and one was in Nagymágocs in Csongrád County.
A large facility housing 500 people and maintained by the City of Budapest is at the heart of a political controversy at the moment. Yesterday afternoon 126 older residents who were infected with the coronavirus were moved to the Korányi Institute, which, ever since 1880, has been treating pulmonary disease patients. The government latched onto the sad case of this massive infection and used it to attack Gergely Karácsony, the mayor of Budapest. Several Fidesz media hacks accused him of being personally responsible for the high numbers.
Karácsony claimed on Wednesday that, ever since March 9, the home has been rigorously following all the rules and regulations mandated by the government. In the last month no visitor was allowed in the facility, and the infected patients were separated from the rest of the residents. Moreover, the Budapest municipal government did its best to find face masks and appropriate disinfectants for the facility since, according to Cecília Müller, the chief medical officer, the government is not responsible for providing personal protective equipment to the staff of facilities maintained by the city.
Karácsony suspects that the coronavirus arrived with a resident who visited a hospital for some other ailment or a medical checkup. Testing returning patients would be necessary to stop the spread of the virus, but the city’s request for testing was denied. At that point, Budapest hired a private firm to do the testing, even though the Hungarian government doesn’t recognize the results of testing done by others.
Although the facility was checked out only a few days ago and everything was found to be in order, yesterday, when Dr. Müller arrived, she discovered several problems. Critically, she learned that there is no constant medical supervision in the facility. She ordered “continuing education” for the staff on ways of preventing the further spread of the virus. In addition, she found that they were not using the prescribed disinfectants, and the ones they had on hand were not stored properly. In addition, some of the “cleaning products” had “expired,” which surprised me because I have never noticed an expiration date on a cleaning product. Of course, of these shortcomings, the most serious is the absence of constant medical care, but, as it turned out, the medical team that is responsible for serving the facility is under the jurisdiction of Cecília Müller’s own “operative division.” So, if they didn’t show up, it is the government’s and not the city’s fault.
Meanwhile, Origo started the attacks on the City of Budapest and its mayor, Gergely Karácsony. Here are some headlines: “Gergely Karácsony’s team didn’t step inside of the home for seniors on Pesti út; they were not interested in what was going on there,” “Gergely Karácsony and the leadership of the capital ignored the nursing home full of coronavirus patients,” and “The coronavirus is raging in the capital’s nursing homes, Karácsony is doing nothing.”
Fidesz party spokesmen began to echo Origo, accusing Karácsony of wrongdoing. While the city argues that requests to Müller’s office were ignored, Fidesz charges the city administration with wanton neglect. As Mária Vásárhelyi pointed out in an article titled “Deadly Game” in Élet és Irodalom, this is not the first time that Viktor Orbán has used epidemics for his political aims, even at the price of human lives.

Poor people, being subjected to the whim of the Fidesz mafia which is not interested in their health at all …
letting hospitals and nursing homes rot for many years is a good strategy to reduce the “pensioners deluge” of course.
And now they’re showing the typical Hungarian motto:
It’s always someone else’s fault!
That this someone else is an opposition politician of course is a godsend for them – even though Karacsony has been “in power” only for a few months and probably not had time to clean up the Fidesz corruption in Bp yet.
And of course many average joes (I’m not allowed to use a stronger expression …) will follow their great leader O1G!
End of rant …
Karacsony clean up corruption…???
You must be joshing.
He just wants to learn how the wily gypsy does it!
KlubRádio reported that Mayor Karàcsony “released several confidential mails” regarding the city’s request that residents be tested in the hospitals before sent back to the elderly home and the refusal to do so.
Remember puppet MÜLLER’s position that only people with symptoms should be testing? Now that this dumb position resulted in these, and surely thousands of other, avoidable infections, the Orbàn regime in its boundless cynicism it trying to turn this failure into a propaganda ammunition.
God save Hu …. God! please! ….seems there’s no one up there…
There is no God if she/he is not within you.
godbusters… [see also pic in the post]
Have you seen Putin… if he visited hospitals then only in a whole body condom. That looks funny when doctors wear homemade mouth guards next to him. Orban looks slightly dressed in contrast to Putin.
“Orban looks slightly dressed in contrast to Putin”
puh puh, less oil less dress??
Look there … is there any oil production in Hungary?

Really from my experience in a hospital as part of the volunteer medical corp the reason many doctors and nurses are not wearing full body suits is due to the heat produced by the very physical nature of what they are doing in ICUs. Really only one full surgical team had on full suits with self contained breathing systems at the hospital I was at. Orban is just walking around looking, he is not performing an emergency tracheotomy, not inserting a breathing tube in someone, shocking someone back to a heart beat using a defibrillator, changing medications or hydration solutions in IV lines, or cleaning and disinfecting blood which is critical to keeping everyone alive. By the way I doubt most people not working in emergency settings understand that people with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) triggered by Covid-19 also have related circulatory failure particularly among older adults (see http://atm.amegroups.com/article/view/15613/html). These jobs in ER and ICU setting are incredibly physical in nature and incredibly high intensity in nature. It is not surprising that so many members of these ICU and emergency teams are getting infected given the intensity of the interventions whether in Budapest, New York City, or Stroger Hospital… Read more »
I have already visited patients who were in quarantine, it was about multi-resistant bacteria, colloquially called hospital germs. MRSA you have to put on hair protection, gloves, mouth protection and additionally a body protection, everything one-way. The risk of infection is relatively low without physical contact. The protective clothing is intended not to spread the bacteria in the hospital. But to have this mouthguard on my face for 2 – 3 hours and constantly tarnishing my glasses was extremely exhausting … and I just sat there.
Re: ‘God save Hu’
Brings up Husvet (Easter). It is a time where Christians contemplate death and resurrection around the Tomb. Ironic how the focus of the ‘sirhelye’ has tough competition with the state of the country and its people. As the latter must be seen now literally as the ‘crying place’ and having only one religious holiday whch is to celebrate its ashes.
Question of the day: is there any kind of ‘resurrection’ at all in the offing?
And here comes another outrage noted by Tappanch yesterday:
While there’s hardly any new budget money for fighting the above crises, under the smoke of the virus and economic crisis the Orban mafia is on the rampage:
A bill tabled April 9th is to is about to transfer 300-320 billion forints (!!) worth of stocks + 2 very expensive pieces of real estate to a foundation (“alapítvànyosítàs” – public money losing their public nature, per Matolcsy).

The refusal to test the most vulnerable people in the most vulnerable institution is criminal negligence.
The reduction of public wealth (as credit collateral) and funds (dividends) in time of “emergency situation” amounts to criminal looting and sabotage.
Both proving again that Hu is occupied by a criminal organization masquerading as government.
Can someone call the EU pls, to point where their money is going…
And now the timeline:
–OV visited the Korányi Institute on April.7 aternoon [FB video]
–Karacsony was invited to OV’s government meeting on April.08
–on April.10 the big increase in positive tests was published by OV’s special task force [this is the latest data from the day before, so April.09!]
No need to guess why!
OV is such a digusting human being, I can’t find any words for really describing how I feel about his usage of the Corona pandemic for [short term] political gain.
I wish the anger I’m feeling about this could give immunity against the virus.
If that would be true I’d be “Corona safe” for more than a 1000 Years and gladly would share my immunity overload with many many others around me…
I felt I could get a stroke reading about the above corpse marauding by this disgusting bunch.
I wish the anger I’m feeling could free the country of this fat blood sucking leach ….
“As Mária Vásárhelyi pointed out in an article titled “Deadly Game” in Élet és Irodalom, this is not the first time that Viktor Orbán has used epidemics for his political aims, even at the price of human lives.”
Hungary is an autocracy and Orban is autocrat. Autocrats are rarely famous for their humanity.
The Orbanist propaganda machinery is working, as always, overtime.
In fact this incident is a reason as good as any to have a propaganda machinery in the first place.
Propaganda is the most useful when it can counter the opposition when the latter could potentially gain a little against the incumbent.
Given Easter and the lack of access to mass media by Karacsony, nobody (only a few already Karacsony supporter) will read or hear about Karacsony’s explanations, the whole affair will degenerate into a he said, she said thing, we can’t possibly know what happened, it’s too complicated, we don’t even want to deal with politics, it’s dirty and murky. Using know how from Russia and other places, Fidesz and Orban will increase their popularity further.
Come on, every Hungarian internet site is full of the story. It’s ridiculous to think that only a few hundred people who happened to see Karácsony’s FB post will know that the Orbán government refused testing people returning from hospitals to nursing homes.
It a good idea to test people on release, but it is not being done consistently here in Chicago either. The CDC has in the USA provided guidance for the release of older patients to nursing homes. It can be seen here https://www.aha.org/advisory/2020-03-24-coronavirus-update-cdc-updates-guidance-discharging-patients-covid-19 .
Specifically the CDC allows older patients with active Covid-19 to return to nursing homes under specific conditions and controls within the facilities themselves. The CDC states “discharge does not require that the patient meet CDC criteria for the discontinuation of COVID-19 transmission-based precautions (TBP)”. So the situation at least here in the USA is not as clear as Karacsony would indicate, I think the standard Mayor Karacsony is a reasonable one depending on the patient flow in a hospital, but its also not one being implemented consistently here in the USA and in other countries for placing older adults back into nursing homes.
Let’s hope so. But the Surkovian (Putin’s original media advisor was Vladislav Surkov) strategy is to confuse the people, of course counter the arguments of the opposition’s side in various ways so that the voters simply give up, admitting that they just can’t make up their mind about whom to believe. I hope that most of those who read about this will believe Karacsony, but I am not sure. This is just the nature of these “controversies” when propaganda is working.
Karacsony is a shithead and a liar.
Why are people praising him?
Where do you get this? I know, you’ll come up with a story about breaking a promise to an MSZP politician who, by the way, later turned out to be a Fidesz tool. The story is not as simple as you try to make it out to be.
Maybe a tool, as you say, but I don’t remember Karacsony backing Bajnai when he ran; and Bajnai would’ve been the best Prime Minister Hungary ever had.
Where on earth are you getting this nonsense? Take a look at Wikipedia entry on Párbeszéd in which you can read about the close cooperation of Együtt (Bajnai) and Párbeszéd (Karácsony).
https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/P%C3%A1rbesz%C3%A9d_Magyarorsz%C3%A1g%C3%A9rt
Or an antagonistic description of the same:
https://demokrata.hu/velemeny/elvek-kontra-karacsony-101109/
Moreover, you can find scores of articles about Bajnai’s strong support of Karácsony during the mayoral campaign. They are close friends and allies.
One-Party-State-“public”-Media keeps playing the Fake News game!
M1 Hirado [“news”], Apr.09: Támadják a magyar gazdaságot – They are attacking the Hungarian economy

And herewith 1PS”p”M’s latest [Apr.10] “news” item, using an old [Apr.07] title again:
Gyengíthették a forintot – They are trying to weaken the forint
PS: sincere thanks for the repeated title, so I noticed that my earlier translation was incorrect.
[I overlooked “het” in the wording, making it less certain, just a try or possibility…]
Note: this time in the subtitle the reference to HirTV’s “news”disappeared… [in the item itself is now referred to almost all media in Hungary…, which in reality comes down to all OV’s private and “public” media]
I don’t know about other districts, but in Buda, I haven’t seen a single postman with a mask or gloves on!
The poor chap who delivered some plants for me, since one of the things I can do is potter around on the terrace, had no mask. When I asked him, he said the post office was not distributing them.
Is Orbán holding back on that too,and saying that it is also the responsibility of Karácsony?
When he declared himself to be King of the realm, I thought that now, finally things cannot get worse, but every day, we are shown new examples of how nasty a human being can be.
We are all kept in the dark about actual number of people with the virus, as well as fatalities.
If the doctors have been silenced, this means the government has something to hide. It is all too shocking for words.
Where can we turn to for help, because Orbán is just a self-serving mafia criminal, who does not care if citizens live or die, unless they have voted for him.
Why aren’t more people being tested?
Don’t know, my local postwoman doesn’t wear any mask either – 2 hours from Budapest. But you’re probably right, it’s the fault of Karácsony as well…!
Here we have people wearing masks that turned their colour from white or green into brown, most use home made ones. I found it very interesting that a tractor driver also wears one, while working alone on a field.
My neighbor said the virus was airborne too. Of course she is afraid of being infected somehow. She is not completely wrong … one coughs in the street and you stand in the wind direction. That was it … the people here are just not enlightened. Are the workers and employees at your company enlightened or do they just get masks István?
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8203189/Coronavirus-simulation-shows-single-cough-spread-germans-two-supermarket-aisles.html
I would like to tell you that we could give masks to protect others to our employees, but we’re temporary closed. At 1 point of the process we have to use masks among other protection gear anyway, but we ran out of FFP3s – not the only thing missing. People familiar with masks know how to use them, under which circumstances they offer protection and what you can expect. I personally think that it is not wrong to try to protect others even when there are no reasons to expect to be infected, just a lot of people think they protect themselves and do not even use things properly. But as long as medical staff report that they haven’t enough protection gear I prefer when people use home made masks, use scarves or whatever, when approaching others instead of using professional masks.
It’s a big mistake not to wear goggles someone can tell that to stupid grand leader…
Hungarian way of discussion.

The fact that Orban is a despicable excuse for a human being who is having the time of his life watching “his” citizens panic and die is not news to any regulars on here; he is one of those dictators who actually gets his kicks watching other suffer (as opposed to solely using that suffering for his own gain).
What gets me is the silence from his voters….
I spoke to someone here in Montreal about Orban.
He said: “What’s the big deal? If I was in his place I would do just the same!”
Hungarians…case closed.
The Golden Age of Hungary–September 1944 when 470,000 jews were shipped to Auschwitz and their homes and business pillaged by God fearing Christians.
Those were the days!
And from that point on to now, and the foreseeable future, Hungarians will continue to walk about with an anvil of shame about their neck.
And are deserving of no succor whatever..
Is it their fault that God wanted it that way..?
Have you started posting self-talks ??
Recall that fever is the first symptom.
“An eye for an eye”.
The jews can attribute their tragic fate to not following the bible (say the pious Christians).
After the war, the jewish secret service wanted to poison 6,000,000 Germans.
Ben Gurion wouldn’t allow it.
Oh, the irony of it…
Petofi – What a lot of nonsense you should seek help ASAP.
I’ve already had help: and this is the result.

For those who read German (sorry if it was here already): historian Krisztián Ungváry in the Austrian (conservative!) “Die Presse” answers to our old friend Vince Szalay-Bobrovniczky’s apology of Orbán’s government: https://www.diepresse.com/5796445/der-fidesz-missbraucht-die-coronapandemie-und-hohlt-die-demokratie-aus . Ungváry shows in detail how Fidesz is using the pandemic to incite hate, support corruption and curb the freedom of media.
“Hungary will come out a winner…”
Well, I know of one Hungarian that will come out a winner, regardless…
Just to speak of that. If one takes a look at foci well it could be said ‘winning/winners’ is directly in inverse proportion to all those forints and more forints going into it. Foci brings out the sporting instincts but it doesn’t put ‘food on the table’ for most Magyars.
Yikes. Probably could build a bunch of modern day hospitals and a couple of libraries with all that money. Making people get , feel well and giving access to educational aids for many. Today one could sound strange talking about all that. Magyarorszag: watching the snowballs going through hell. Whoooooosh……
Don’t worry! Building those hospitals and taking public school facilities up to the new standard will be among the conditions to submit to, for getting any of those new EU-loans. The money will only come at a price.
Hopefully the EU will come down hard with the Orban Government and its corrupt ways. The people of Hungary are suffering because of these corrupt and self interested Orban politicians.
Are you sure you’re not a Trump-supporting yank?
