The Athina Németh case is a gift to Miklós Kásler and the Orbán government

The most disputed decision of the government during the COVID-19 pandemic was the order of Miklós Kásler, the minister in charge of healthcare, that forced hospitals nationwide to make 36,000 beds available for potential virus patients. The consensus at the time was that, even if Hungary is hit extraordinarily hard, it would be unlikely that 36,000 patients would need hospital care. There was a general outcry over the inhumane treatment of extremely ill patients, whom hospitals sent home where no proper care was available.

It was under these circumstances that a woman who calls herself Athina Németh announced on Facebook that she was willing to look after patients who had been dismissed from hospitals. About a week later, on April 22, she said that she was already taking care of nine patients. Two days later, on April 24, she told Pesti Hírlap that nine of her ten patients had died. Her followers on Facebook were horrified. On April 27, she was invited by Klub Rádió’s “Reggeli gyors” (Morning express) for an interview, which Tímea Szabó, leader of Párbeszéd, must have heard because in the afternoon session of parliament that day she talked about Ms Németh’s story. Németh even got in touch with a journalist from The Financial Times.

Somewhat later, MSZP’s Lajos Korózs decided to use the case for political purposes. I have always considered Korózs a decent politician, especially active in social issues, with pensioners, and the poor. He seems to have been the one who came up with the idea of getting touch with Athina Németh. He was so impressed that, with the approval of the party brass, he set out to create a video interview with her. He didn’t act alone. MSZP MEP István Ujhelyi’s chief-of-cabinet, Tamás Lajos Szalay, who earlier had worked for Népszava and Népszabadság, made the video. Although one must handle information coming from Hír TV with a large dose of skepticism, it seems that even Bertalan Tóth, the chairman of the party, approved of the plan. As Korózs later admitted, they didn’t spend much time finding out anything about Athina Németh.

I encountered Athina Németh on György Bolgár’s “Let’s talk it over” program and had an uneasy feeling about her on the basis of her speaking style and tone. Moreover, she made truly wild claims about the healthcare situation in Hungary. Although I have been a persistent critic of the Hungarian medical community, I couldn’t imagine that any doctor could be so ignorant and negligent that he would remove fatty tissue from the breast of one of his patients instead of the tumor. My discomfort was magnified when I later had the opportunity to see Korózs and Athina Németh in person on ATV’s “Egyenes beszéd.” By then, it was evident that MSZP had been conned by a scoundrel, that she was a fraud from the get-go. Right there, during this interview, Korózs should have distanced himself from the whole affair, especially since earlier the party had opted to remove the video interview with Németh from its website. The woman was unable to answer any of Egon Rónay’s questions, and Korózs’s explanation for the removal of the video was pitiful. Korózs eventually became unreachable, while MSZP promised an “internal investigation.”

Lajos Korózs and Athina Németh ON ATV’s “Egyenes beszéd”

We don’t really know who Athina Németh is; we may never know. We do know, however, that she never worked for the National Ambulance Service. It is also doubtful, as she claimed, that she spent 43 years as a paramedic. It is certain that she couldn’t have worked at a private ambulance service in the 1970s because there was no such thing in those days. As she was running out of tall tales, Németh resorted to a new story about an alleged name change in 2002 and claimed that she received her training in Germany, after which she worked for the Szamaritánus Mentőszolgálat (Samaritan Ambulance Service). But all that the spokesman of that ambulance service could confirm, when asked by RTL Klub, was that at the ambulance station they have a temporary hotel where Athina lived for a few years. Once the Samaritan story was unmasked, Németh came up with the name of another private ambulance service, AMS Assistance, where she said she worked, which also turned out to be a lie. When challenged, she accused the firm of employing her without paying social security taxes. AMS Assistance had enough. The firm is going to sue her.

What is much more dangerous for Németh than AMS’s suit is that the ministry of human resources  filed a complaint against her for scaremongering, and the police are investigating her case. If found guilty, she could receive a jail sentence of up to five years.

The media has spent an inordinate amount of time on Németh’s fabrication of her background while we know practically nothing about the fate of her ten patients, nine of whom allegedly died. The only exception is one person whose daughter, Lilla Szeleczki, came forward and was shown on Korózs’s video. The case ended up at the Hungarian Helsinki Committee, whose co-chair stressed that “whether Athina Németh was a paramedic or not, the question is whether it is all right to release someone from the hospital in such a state as the patient was.” About the other eight presumably by now dead people, we know nothing because it seems that their relatives haven’t come forth. It is unlikely that the Hungarian police who are charged with investigating the case will try to find out the veracity of her claims about the patients. Moreover, I’m not even sure whether it is their job. One thing is sure, however. Korózs’s handling of this case did harm not only to his own party but to the opposition as a whole, which works so hard to survive in a country where democracy is already dead.

The media in Hungary seems to be less responsible in tracking down the facts than elsewhere, but they use the propaganda value of anything, even the lies, as well as anybody else.

Well by way of example of that media level incompetence we had in today’s Magyar Nemzet a story in its “Abroad” section on the Philippines, China, and the US Navy titled in translation “A door has already been opened for China in the Philippines.” Its author is István Gál in this article he claims “Chinese army has built military bases in Philippine areas just a few hundred nautical miles from the Philippine capital, Manila.” He cites no clear source for this statement at all. As far as I can determine it likely comes from this story https://newsinfo.inquirer.net/1236772/a-good-number-of-chinese-army-reportedly-in-ph-lacson (March 4, 2020). The story is completely based on speculation of a Senator from the Philippines and even the Senator states there is no confirmation and it needs to be investigated. This article from last year that appeared in the Atlantic presents a little more balanced perspective on China and the Philippines https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2019/05/philippines-us-ally-china-investment/588829/ .   The sad truth is President Trump is one of the mad man current President of the Philippines Rodrigo Duterte, most supportive allies. According to the Guardian Dutrete used death squad to kill criminals and opponents for years (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/sep/15/philippines-president-drug-dealers-rodrigo-duterte-extrajudicial-killings-crocodile). A level of extra-judicial force Trump might like to apply to… Read more »

The woman is a fraud, the media was diletant and the politicians involved were dupes. Her demeanor and assertion about 9 out of 10 quickly dead should have sounded the bells loudly.
While hundreds have probably died unnecessarily because of the Kásler/Orbàn follies, this sorry episode handed a propaganda victory to the deplorables on a silver platter.

They were happy to believe to her and she knew she had a market eager to hear such stories….One neat thing about democracy is that people are free to shoot themselves in the foot.

Cautionary note: media’s ‘Outer Limits’ could be coming back.

Back when 24/7: it was ‘Kadar TV’. Janos didn’t have as many tv’s operating like VO. But anyway he knew when they tuned in everybody watched the same ‘program’.

For the future?
Orban TV:

All commercial-free too. The new reklam: advertising with that twist of being more than ‘opinion’. Er…it’s a ‘prop’. 😎

A funny story in a way but of course really sad. And now let’s return to the facts:
Whatever this (crazy?) woman did wouldn’t have happened without Kásler throwing those patients out of the hospitals!
PS:
In Germany over the years also we had several cases of crazy people with forged papers claiming to be doctors, even surgeons – and killing several people this way. Sometimes it took several years and repeated complaints by nurses who wondered about the way these fakes treated people to find the truth.
In some cases the culprits were nurses in one of them it was a guy who had worked a t a post office – whose hobby was medicine …

@”As Korózs later admitted, they didn’t spend much time finding out anything about Athina Németh.”   The problem with people like Athina Nemeth is that in reality any person with a minimum amount of wisdom, life experience, wit would realize immediately that she was a fraud. It’s just an immediate gut feeling without which it is simply impossible to survive in politics for two seconds and Kórózs has been politically active over 30 years.   Yet, she could apparently fool a top opposition politician (OK, Korozs is not really a top politician in the true sense of the word, but simply being a member of parliament makes him a very rare species).   Moreover, in MSZP’ situation (a former governing party in terminal decline) any real politician would’ve thoroughly vetted a person like Athina Nemeth and they would’ve realized in a second that she was just too shady. For whatever reason, nobody bothered to check her out. How can that be?   If I bring somebody (like a new recruit) to a party, or a deal, or a scoop which can be used as a scandal, I own the consequences (and claim credit if I am successful) and am responsible… Read more »

Strange just a few calls and some gumshoe work by ‘independent’ media could have stopped all the fools rushing in. Must have been their reporting day off.

This wasn’t an example of ‘educational’ media that could be used to make evident what’s going on in society. It’s ‘teaching’ leaves a lot to be desired. And it’s obvious there are some who want the media audience to keep on being deaf, dumb and blind as to what’s going on behind the scenes.

Lajos Korózs was swindled, or at least he swindled himself. But it’s a very weird story Athina Németh had to assume that her swindle had to be exposed if it was one. And based on that, I have two assumptions…

1 She is mentally impaired and wanted attention.

2 In my opinion, Orban is a vile person and he wanted to trick the opposition. Fidesz instructed Athina Németh to say what she said, that Orban’s nonsensical decree against the opposition, which is much disputed in the EU, makes sense. Whether Athina Németh will ever be convicted is written in the stars, if not, that could be an indication that she is a Fidesz agent, if not, a woman who is apparently confused will be convicted.

All in all, the fact that people have died unnecessarily is further swept under the carpet by the liberation of hospital beds, making further detection even more difficult. Who knows the Fidesz or Orban reckons with all bad things. Why should Athina Németh make herself public if her statement is verifiably false?

“Why should Athina Németh make herself public if her statement is verifiably false?”

For any number of reasons which we likely never find out.

She is like the Orgovany guy who came from a village on the Great Plains with no money and background in financial services and came out to buy the Questor brokerage company (a huge scandal a few years ago in which the Fidesz-connected moneyman operated a Ponzi scheme). Probably the local prosecution (which is a fidesznik party organization in essence) had something against him and gave him a deal (to enter this story) but the idea (for him to buy the bankrupt brokerage firm) was scrapped on a political level so the guy disappeared from view after a few days in the national media.

Or there was the “Swedish women” who claimed on TV that she moved to Hungary because “the public security was deteriorating in Sweden”.

But there were many other such weird creatures in various scandals.

Fidesz always finds these people and the opposition or the independent media can never find our the real reasons. They do their job and then disappear from view.

That’s my thought so far too – she’s a Fidesz. Fidesz has a tradition of undermining and compromising the opposition with moles.

Baron Munchhausen, being a real person, was plenty displeased with the portrayal of his in the book, nonetheless his tall tales did stem from his serving an empire, which didn’t rule The Seven Seas.

Once reality is heavily controlled and resistance is internal, cabin fever (in this case, literally) can make many susceptible to such confabulations.

Two possibilities: the woman is simply a pathological liar, or the whole thing was a setup to start with, which I wouldn’t exclude. In any case, journalists (and opposition politicians too) have the obligation to check whether a story is true, before using it. Certainly if the story sounds too good to be true to start with.

If hundreds of thousands don’t see that OV is a fraud, then it doesn’t come as a suprise that copycats like this lady who operate on a smaller scale can have some success too. Gulibility is widespread in Hu.

A politician should be smarter than modest-living average joes who don’t care about and don’t really understand politics. At least I would expect this from the party I would like to vote for.

Marty,

In Georgia a woman is literally gunning for Congress, she used Facebook ads which glorified violence, she posed with a Neo Nazi, and the coup the grace? She’s an effing QAnon believer.

I don’t get you. This was a serious operation against the opposition, Athina Nemeth was just a means of achieveing the goal: to make the opposition look like a bunch of fools, who always cry wolf, irresponsible, amateurish.

It was mission accomplished.

Tnx.
Free speech my foot:
– The decision to suspend an internet service is made by the two secret services and there’s no appeal.
– The criteria of “may endanger” is broad enough by itself, but bearing in mind how the regime operates even the justification will be classified, so practically it will be “because I say so”.
– The 90 day suspension + 90 day extension is obviously designed to punish or ruin the service, because the elimination of the perceived dangerous material is a matter of hours.

Now we have a police state Observer, someone wanted the Stasi back, I never wanted that. What happens now?…but in the medium term there will be more brain drain. At some point Orban will be forced to build a wall, maybe financed by the EU? Hello EU Ursula von der Leyen, Orban needs money for more secret service and Wall do you hear something? Our obese dictator has proven for over a decade that any old nonsense (as long as its draped in bigotry) will be believed by the considerable proportion of the Hungarian electorate who themselves are irredeemable bigots.

He told them their pensions were safe with his mafia; he told them that there was an Afghan refugee hiding under their beds ready to steal their chickens; he told them that George Soros eats Christian babies.

In each case the Ordinary Nazi Joes believed him.. In comparison, Ms Nemeth’s tales almost sound rational. Magyarorszag 2020, if Fat Vik tells you white is black then don’t question your eyes.
