HVG published an illuminating article today in connection with the by-election to be held in the Szerencs-Tiszaújváros region of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County due the death of Ferenc Koncz, Fidesz member of parliament, who had a tragic motorcycle accident on July 10. With Koncz’s passing, Fidesz’s two-thirds majority is at stake.
Koncz was an important Fidesz politician in the region as well as in national politics. He began his political career in 1990 when he was elected to the Szerencs City Council. In 2010, he became the mayor of the city. At the same time, starting in 1998, he served as a member of parliament, and, with the exception of the 2006-2010 period, he remained an influential member of the Fidesz parliamentary caucus. Between 2010 and 2018 he was elected to parliament from the Fidesz list, not as the candidate of the district. During those eight years, the Fidesz member of parliament from the district was Roland Mengyi, who became notorious as Voldemort, and whose career Hungarian Spectrum followed closely in August-September 2016. Mengyi is currently serving a four-year sentence in connection with one of the most serious Fidesz corruption cases.
In 2018, Fidesz dropped Mengyi and nominated Koncz to run from the district. Koncz had to face two other candidates: Jobbik’s László Bíró and Zsolt Papp, the candidate of MSZP-Párbeszéd. Koncz won, but only with 49.3% of the votes. Now that Bíró is the candidate of all the opposition parties, the path to victory is more difficult for the Fidesz candidate.
Under these circumstances, it was critical for Fidesz to come up with a strong replacement candidate. The party chose Ferenc Koncz’s 30-year-old daughter. Commentators admit that it might be an asset that she is a woman and young, and of course she would carry on the Koncz family tradition. But for the last four years she has been out of the country, working at the Hungarian Embassy in Washington, ostensibly in charge of the development of bilateral U.S.-Hungarian relations.
Although the announcement was made by the local Fidesz organization, as we know it is Viktor Orbán who approves every parliamentary candidate. In this case, he was most likely the one who came up with the idea because, as the HVG article today recalled, “Viktor Orbán is beholden to the Koncz family.” The story goes all the way back to the year 2000, when Anikó Lévai, Orbán’s wife, became involved in a winery business, at whose board meetings Orbán usually stood in for her and gave business advice, based on privileged information, to the fellow owners. He also suggested that they apply for government grants, adding that “we shouldn’t win as much as we were asking for; we shouldn’t receive the most money.” Orbán managed to save his skin when an aggrieved wife of one of the owners leaked the story by arguing that the meetings normally held after dinner in a private home were not board meetings.
It was in this tight spot that Orbán received considerable support from Ferenc Koncz, who was a prominent local politician by 2000. Moreover, in 2005, when the story of the winery business broke and a parliamentary committee was formed to investigate the case, Fidesz delegated Koncz, whom HVG describes as a tried-and-true Fidesz loyalist. Lately, it has also become known that Ferenc Koncz’s wife, Tünde Kondás, an economist, is a key member of the Mészáros team. She allegedly has a thorough understanding of the complicated business arrangements of the Mészáros empire.
Zsófia Koncz was born about the time her father entered politics. In a conversation on Hír TV, she recalled that already at the age of 11 she was accompanying her father in his travels through the Szerencs area. Therefore, it wasn’t surprising that at the age of 15 or 16 she became one of the founders of the Szerencs Fidelitas, Fidesz’s youth organization. Four years later, she was a member of the national committee, responsible for “youth affairs.” In 2013, she became the deputy chairman of the organization and was reelected two years later.
It was at that time that Zsófia Koncz’s name became widely known in the country. In March 2015, she and Fidelitas President László Böröcz announced that because left-wing activists had been vocal at Viktor Orbán’s speech on March 15, Fidelitas would launch a “provocateur monitor.” Any Fidelitas member who recognizes one of these provocateurs should report his or her name and add a photograph of the culprit. They even gave an e-mail address for the purpose and advertised it on Facebook. The goal of the monitor was “to expose party members or party activists who are masquerading as civilians.” It didn’t take long for Facebook to remove the call for action, and shortly thereafter the National Data Protection and Freedom of Information Authority declared their action to be illegal. Shortly after the incident, Zsófia Koncz disappeared from the Fidelitas leadership. She was then sent to Washington.
Zsófia Koncz is naturally again in the news, in part because her campaign activities are questionable. In one case, she was campaigning with children at a playground in Szerencs. The local election committee censured her action, but on appeal the National Election Committee (NEC) found her campaigning with children legitimate because the law forbids campaigning with children only in educational institutions. NEC came to the same conclusion when Koncz campaigned in a school building in the company of teachers and students, this time on the grounds that the school wasn’t yet open. Today, LMP in Borsod published a complaint about her campaign activities. In addition to the charge of campaigning with children, LMP also objects to her promise to refurbish a long-neglected road by collecting signatures and passing them on to the non-profit state company in charge of the country’s roads.
A few days ago, Péter Márki-Zay, mayor of Hódmezővásárhely, wrote a few less then complimentary lines about Zsófia Koncz. He claimed that the best Fidesz could come up with was a candidate “who until now has been mostly known as a party girl.” He maintained that “aside from having the same last name as the deceased member of parliament, she has no other qualifications.” In Fidelitas she was known as “the party face of shindigs.” Magyar Nemzet was outraged. Márki-Zay was called a conductor of hatred who attacked Zsófia Koncz’s femininity and morals “in a base, vulgar way.”
I don’t know about her as a party girl, but she didn’t strike me as a mental giant in the interview with Hír TV I watched. Apparently, she is reluctant to engage in conversations with journalists and often cuts Q&A sessions short in order to avoid them. Local businesses and organizations are helping the obviously inexperienced Koncz, while her opponent, László Bíró, on account of his earlier anti-Semitic statements, is an obvious target. The campaign is already ugly, and we still have more than a month to go.

“she didn’t strike me as a mental giant”
Of course not! Orbán is in need of “133 brave men” who function well as voting sheep. Thinking independently or the ability to form an opinion of their own is obstructive for that job and could be at some point even be dangerous for the owner of Hungary himself.
“she didn’t strike me as a mental giant”
If she was a “mental giant” she wouldn’t be welcome in Fidesz.
Is “party girl” a euphemism I wonder? Wouldn’t it be great to get some salacious revelations the day before the election?
Maybe she was one of the hookers on Mayor Borkai’s sex/drugs yacht outing?
Oh no,no,no. I am sure like Rahel Orban she is the model of Fidesz feminine and Christian virtue. In fact, her nickname of party girl probably comes from her habit of organising lavish parties for disadvantaged kiddies. She looks the sort. Does a lot of work for charity doesnt like to talk about it 😉
I am pretty confident that the two roles are well able to coexist. Especially in Hungary. Sure you all know the Russian word for a hooker?
Just to clarify.
Orban can also rely on the Mi Hazánk people in the Parliament, which is a group made up of former Jobbikniks who decided to support Fidesz instead of the opposition. Orban can also easily bribe one or two opposition MPs to stay at home with a flu when there is a 2/3s vote.
But Mi Hazánk is firmly pro-Fidesz.
Finally, it is the Constitutional Court which has power to decide whether the 2/3s rules were complied with and it is literally no more than a Fidesz party chapter.
So all in the all this election has only symbolic relevance (which is not to be underestimated of course).
The Orban regime announced today that the ONLY independent radio station in the country, Klubradio cannot broadcast from February 14, 2021.
(Its frequency permit will not be renewed).
Klubradio was banned to broadcast outside Budapest 9 years ago. The “digital radio” technique (which required special radios used in some taxis) was cancelled on September 5, 2020.
Klubradio should move its website abroad, because I suspect the regime will ban its internet access as well.
The regime achieved complete media monopoly with this step.
https://media1.hu/2020/09/11/breking-nem-kap-hosszabbitast-a-klubradio/
The official announcement:
http://nmhh.hu/cikk/214598/Ujra_palyazhato_lesz_a_Budapest_929_MHz_frekvencia
They can move it abroad but the point is that most listeners will not switch to internet.
Just as half of index.hu readers will not follow the journalists to telex.hu.
It’s a habit thing and people know how to switch on an old radio when eating your lunch, or TV set, but can hardly use or even if they know will not set up, a computer and play with a complicated system etc. etc.
Also, those who are very tech-savvy and follow Klubradio etc. with such loyalty, they are politically irrelevant since they support the opposition anyway. With them the fun is just to torment them and make their life more difficult.
The really important goal is to get rid of the those less firmly opposition leaning listeners, readers, who are a bit uncertain, wavering etc. who might not go to vote at all. They will not take the energy to listen to Klubradio on the internet because it’s a different, new habit and they will not take it up just as most people still watch TV on the TV set. That’s just the way it is. Internet is not a savior.
Yes, we are all unable to use modern technique.
Half of the people will of course follow Klubradio to the internet, but half will not. And this is enough for Orban, mission accomplished.
A little philosophy today
The ‘sickness unto death’: the loss of journalistic freedom. Certainly an ‘existential’ thing now.
Soren K the Dane would be right. If Christ came back down to earth he wouldn’t attack the high priests but the low journalists.
“cannot broadcast from 2021.Feb.14”
my recommendation: f*ck the permit!
Klubradio should from now on prepare technically to the max so it can just keep broadcasting on its current frequency in BP!
and even outside BP where technically possible!
2019.Jan atlatszo had an article about the Koncz family, “Meet one of OV’s favorite families – the father, the mother and even the daughter all work for NER*” [tagged “Year of Families”]
see https://blog.atlatszo.hu/?s=Koncz+Ferenc
*NER = Nemzeti Együttműködés Rendszere = OV’s System of National Cooperation [basically every Hungarian faithful to OV gets a some crumbs of the National cake, cherries are for OV’s close relations only]
Also interesting is that in Szerencs [Koncs’s town] happened a “infight” between OV faithfuls, and in the municipality election of 2019.Oct the winner was Koncz’s former deputy who as “local independent” ran against Koncz’s & OV’s candidate. Actually fully changing the council of Szerencz from 100% OV into nulla% OV and 100% “local independent” [but also 0% United Opposition].
some details at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferenc_Koncz [details strangely missing in wiki’s HU page]
Now wondering how those “local independents” behave in the campaign of Koncz’s daughter…
Here’s the “local independent” mayor of Szerencs, Mr.Nyiri, speaking about the coming by-election https://www.facebook.com/nyiritibor.szerencs/videos/1606839266143903/ [incl.comments!]
And here is the facebookpage of the mayor [United Opposition] of Tiszaújváros, the main city of the electoral district:
https://www.facebook.com/pg/Dr-Fülöp-György-Tiszaújváros-polgármestere-105708004396727/posts/
I didn’t notice anything about the coming by-election, btw there is a respectful post about Koncz Ferenc, published on the day he died [Jul.10]
Ferenc, it is the official fb of the mayor. By this he mustn’t campaign by law there. While FIDESZ does so – and regularly without any consequences – this law is with all consequences applied to the opposition.
There is more background on this race here:

Is Trump Putin’s revenge for Gorbachov ?
Gorbachov’s perestroyka destroyed the Soviet Union.
Trump’s MAGA makes the US weak, MAWA !!
Trump & Barr are trying to destroy democracy.
Barr and Trump said that they would not recognize Biden’s victory if it is a close race.
On election night, Trump will declare victory, then will try to stop the counting of the mail-in ballots.
If Justice Ginsburg dies before January, Trump & his friends in the Senate can appoint a new Supreme Court member. The new majority can validate any cheating Trump will commit during & after the election.
When Trump says there will be cheating in the election – he knows.

Re: on the elections..
Considering the Budapest – Moscow relationship hope no hacking factorIes are humming in the former as the Fidesz love fest with a ‘Kookoo Keep On Carry On’ Trump (no doubt he loves the Churchill illusion) would just be going too far. Woodward sure has brought out the dizzy- doozyness in that fella.
Trump: the poor caboose that got unhitched from the main train. It’s a wonder how Fidesz can support US lost conservative cargo as the object leaches millions of brain cells every millisecond. Like the hatred directed against Soros they have to set aside time for it also in their hatred of liberals by voting Trump.
It may be a wonder, but seeing how Fidesz represent unhitched and ejected European ideals, they may as well join eachother in their respective orbits around the media world.
Calm down tappanch what will happen with the US presidential election will happen. The good thing in the situation that Trump attempts somehow to seize power if he is electorally defeated is the now decisive and public turn of probably the majority of members of the Joint Chiefs of staff on Trump. Soldiers are “in love with me,” Trump told reporters Monday. “The top people in the Pentagon probably aren’t because they want to do nothing but fight wars so that all of those wonderful companies that make the bombs and make the planes and make everything else stay happy.” Well this to be blunt pissed off the entire US military officer corp along with most retired officers. Army Chief of Staff Gen. James McConville pushed back one day later publicly on Trump’s comments about the officer corp and military contracting. He stated “Many of these leaders (senior military officers) have sons and daughters that serve in the military. Many of these leaders have sons and daughters that have gone to combat and may be in combat right now. I can assure the American people that the senior leaders would only recommend sending our troops to combat when it’s required… Read more »
Re: “There is no question in my mind Trump would attempt to purge the leadership of the US military if he wins. Being both a coward and a traitor he fears the officer corp, he is right to have this fear because they have become his enemy to the extent they can given the rules they are under and the Constitution of the USA”. Emperor Trump is arguably lucky compared to another time. If he was in the later Empire after the Principiate and considering his repeated emasculations of the military and its serving troops it would be quite probable that ‘his’ generals , who really give him his power to rule, would erase the insults and depose him quickly together with his servile praetorian guards. And that fate usually comes with ‘unpleasantness’ and ignominy after playing havoc with the state’s stewardship. Back to the present and we’ll see what the times have in store for a man unfit to rule over a great kingdom now listing badly to Trumpian starboard and with his cannon shooting wildly to port . Hopefully he will be dispatched efficiently by ballots. At least then both the commanding generals, the troops in the military… Read more »
OT – OV’s Corona border regulations changed [again]
On Sep.01 the border was almost fully closed [except football players, diplomats, Czechs, Slovaks, and so on]. But for Austrians it was still valid, only commuters could enter till max.30km and with a 24hr restriction.
Today these limitations for [Austrian and Hungarian] commuters are with immediate effect lifted.

In the last six months, during the epidemic,
A.
Orban spent, stole or announced to spend an enormous amount of public money:
2 billion euros on medical equipment that nobody saw,
2 billion euros on German tanks to placate Merkel,
1 billion euros on US-made air defense system to sweeten Trump.
Redirected a large % of the revenues of the local governments to himself.
Now he demands that opposition-led Budapest hand over all of its reserves, some 140 million euros.
B.
Took over the the most popular internet website,
C.
took over the last university which showed some independent thinking,
D.
announced the closure (in next February) of the last independent radio station.
“most popular internet website” with new journalists:
Headline:
Klubradio’s frequency will be taken away
Klubradio has accepted (“tudomásul vette”) the decision.
In reality, Klubradio is protesting, they have not accepted the decision.
(There is not much they can do in the Fidesz-ruled Hungarian court system)
Well, I listened to Bolgár’s program and heard both him and Arató, but neither of them said that they accepted the decision. On the contrary, they will fight with legal and “non-legal” means.
The epidemic is spreading in Hungary at 7% a DAY, but Orban announced today there would not be any lockdown (let me add: in order to improve his GDP number)
Trump called Orban two days ago. Orban told him that he is rooting for Trump’s reelection.
https://index.hu/belfold/2020/09/11/orban_viktor_altalanos_korlatozasra_nem_kell_szamitani/
You should stop reading the fidesznik index.hu and start following Telex (at least on the FB).
Telex says on FB that polls conducted by the government show that people are not afraid of the virus any more (they think they understand it, the risks), are much more worried about losing their jobs.
Also the government does not want to pay for social programs as it has not much money left (what is available goes to strategic programs like stadiums, churches etc.). Fidesz never gives in, never retreats on strategic goals, everything else is irrelevant.
Trump and Orban also talked about Covid 19. Imagine that Trump getting advice on Covid 19 from Orban. Indeed Orban would be a good source of learning about lying to the public about Covid 19, but does Trump really need that advice?
OT – supporting opposition in Belarus – HU?
Diplomats from Western embassies in Minsk are supporting and protecting the only free remaining member of the Opposition Council in Belarus. That is writer and Nobel Laureate Svetlana Alexievich, the other 6 members are arrested or left “voluntary” Belarus.
The diplomats, representing 16 countries and the EU, take turns guarding her in her home.
Here’s a tweet by the Swedish Foreign Minister about it – https://twitter.com/AnnLinde/status/1304087973810626561
Now guess which is one of the EU member states so far NOT joining this action?
Yeah right, OV’s proud,sMart(y) and cocky Hungary!
What are you saying Ferenc? I do think the Foreign Ministry should’ve supported Alexievich (whose book I personally recommended here). That’s crystal clear. Of course, the Hungarian ambassador to Belarus is a pro-Russian, pro-Azeri deep state fidesznik, he would’ve never participated in such a protest action. He is there where he is exactly because he believes in hierarchy, loyalty to the superior, doesn’t like liberal, feminist women who can’t sit still on their ass and so on, “why are they creating a disorder”? Orban is pro-Russian, anti-West and pro-autocracy so this is no surprise. Orban can get what he wants from the Western politicians even if he acts as a jerk, it’s actually bigger fun this way (look at how the EPP is still unable even to vote on the expulsion, let alone actually expel Fidesz). No matter how corrupt he is, the Western politicians will always support him because he corrupts them one way or another – meanwhile he is showing to the world that all this talk about principles, democracy and human rights is just bullshit. Only money and power matter. The ideological damage he inflicts on “the West” is thus enormous. I also wrote that whenever there… Read more »
?into which picture?
Many of us scribblers have this image of Orban, some of us have had it for a very long time. For me it is completely incomprehensible how one can choose such a “person”. If you love your country just a little bit, you should tell them to go to hell. Unfortunately, we are stuck in a situation that requires a small measure of overview as a counterbalance to the ego. We have a big kindergarten here because there never was a kindergarten, even if there was one.
Thank you, Marty.
The regime supporters are blindly embracing all internal “anti”ism, but also the pro-Kremlin policies at the same time.
Regarding “The diplomats, representing 16 countries and the EU, take turns guarding her in her home.” A nice gesture, but when Lysenko’s KGB decides it is necessary to take Svetlana Alexievich into custody it will do so whether or not the diplomats are present. If they make such a move we can all be assured that Putin has personally authorized it. One of our host Eva’s periodic readers named Judy Dempsey from the Carnegie Europe website has a number of options to actually do something as opposed to waiting for Lysenko to arrest opposition leaders see https://carnegieeurope.eu/strategiceurope/82666.
I think Ms Dempsey is timid actually because some level of NATO saber rattling needs to be included in any effective strategy to contain the Lysenko/Putin effort to maintain total authoritarian rule in Belarus under the control of Russia. But at least Dempsey is clear that the EU is letting the Belarus opposition be crushed and limiting its response to media stunts and great statement of indignation. Of course Trump and Orban are traitor covert allies of Putin would not even go that far.
Interview with Orban’s extremist “journalist”, Fidesz party member #5, Mr Bayer.
“There is no such thing as independent press”
Yeah, Orban managed to achieve this slogan in Hungary.
It is all right that he got his apartment in the Royal Castle district by breaking the law. ‘Everybody does the same way”
https://azonnali.hu/cikk/20200910_en-ezt-a-rendszert-szolgalom-es-erre-buszke-vagyok-bayer-zsolt-az-azonnalinak
The opposition mayor of the Castle district started an investigation after the voluntary admission by Bayer. But she cannot do too much.
https://444.hu/2020/09/11/bayer-zsolt-egy-interjuban-teljesen-nyiltan-elmeselte-hogyan-sertett-torvenyt-szinlelt-szerzodessel-v-naszalyi-polgarmester-vizsgalatot-inditott
Bayer yesterday claimed in Magyar Nemzet, the main print propaganda daily, that the Skripal and Navalnij poisonings were probably committed by Americans in order to implicate the Russians (its about oil and gas in the background Bayer suspects).
Of course Bellingcat identified the Skripal perpetrators (and other members of the team) plus the head of GRU suddenly died after the Skripal case was botched and not much after Putin had a one on one with him in which Krobov probably did not receive much praize.
I have to read this new book.
Burgis: Kleptopia
[the author] “follows the dirty money that is flooding the global economy, emboldening dictators, and poisoning democracies. From the Kremlin to Beijing, Harare to Riyadh, Paris to the White House, the trail shows something even more sinister: the THIEVES ARE UNITING. And the human cost will be great.”
Kleptocrats of the world, unite!
” The Nats, they declare themselves the saviours of besieged nations while overseeing the plunder of those nations. Drain the swamp, they cry, as they luxuriate in it. They have taken hold in central Europe, eastern Europe and Russia, with imitators on every continent: Bolsonaro in Brazil, Duterte in the Philippines, Erdoğan in Turkey, Netanyahu in Israel, Maduro in Venezuela, Trump in Washington. Left and Right: these are just their costumes. The mafia would admire the loyalty they inspire: at the Donald’s impeachment trial for his Ukrainian favour-trading, Republican senators listened to cast-iron evidence that he had abused his office, then acquitted him. Those who resist them believe that, once they are gone, the institutions they have distorted will snap back to how they were. But like a parasite altering a cell it invades, so kleptocratic power transforms its host. Those who use their public office to steal must hold on to it not just for the chance of further riches but in order to maintain the immunity from prosecution that goes with it. When elections come around, losing is not an option.”
Orban appointed an apparatchik, an undersecretary to lead the National Election Bureau.
The Bureau’s role is to handle the computers in the elections, in short to conduct fraudulent elections in Hungary.

Hungary purchased 218 Lynx KF41 vehicles and nine Buffalo armored recovery vehicles. These are the first Lynx KF41 vehicles ever sold. Last year the firm tried to sell some to the U.S., but the deal fell through.
I wonder how much money ended up in the Fidesz war chest.
https://www.defensenews.com/global/europe/2020/09/11/hungary-is-rheinmetalls-launch-customer-for-the-lynx-fighting-vehicle/
A bit OT – but not too much:
The guy who invested a lot of money in Rheinmetall a few years ago is Larry Fink – boss of financial giant Blackrock.
PS:
Already in the 1930 Rheinmetall/Borsig sold weapons to Horthy’s Hungary …
If ever there was a business that knows how to persuade it’s customers into making wild deals with lavish gift-showers, kickback-bargains, credit and residual industrial orders, it must be the international arms business.
How they do it within the EU should be accessible, hopefully, but looking at the global market, a long trail of corruption scandals accompany many of the big arms-deals.
It’s quite unusual for a European NATO member to make such an exclusive purchase. Almost all the big arms-purchases by European NATO countries are made by as may allied partners in unison as possible, securing better prices and sharing some of the (normally high) costs of training and stock-maintenance.
Klaus Mangold and Gunther Oettinger are worth every penny, that’s for sure.
Real christians …
We’re only in it for the money!
I’ve written about this before:
Oettinger was thrown out of my favourite bar because he thought he could enter in his “uniform” – some reactionary student groups in Germany (Verbindungen, especially Burschenschaften) still have their special signs – and fight with rapiers/epees as a hobby).
Even more OT – or not?
Just a few days in Heidelberg ago a group of these loonies attacked a guest – because he mentioned that among his ancestors were some Jews!
